About the Speakers
Pete Ugo, Partner, Crowe Horwath LLP
Pete Ugo is a partner at Crowe Horwath LLP and leads the firm’s national not-for-profit and higher education audit practice. He has 20 years of audit and consulting experience with Crowe, and has spent his entire career working in the not-for-profit and higher education industries. His client base primarily includes higher education, foundations, cultural arts, trade and membership, social service, and other nonprofit organizations. Pete is a frequent presenter at national and state conferences, and has served as a member of the steering committee for the AICPA’s Not-for-Profit Industry conference. Pete is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and serves clients throughout the Midwest and other areas of the country.
Angie Lewis, Managing Director, Crowe Horwath LLP
Angie has been with Crowe for 18 years and is a Managing Director in the Assurance Professional Practice which serves as Crowe Horwath’s National Office. In this capacity, her responsibilities include providing guidance on matters related to accounting, auditing, compliance, ethics, independence, audit quality, and inspections as well as drafting responses to professional standards proposed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and other authoritative bodies. Prior to joining the National Office, Angie specialized in providing audit, accounting, and compliance services to not-for-profit, educational, and governmental organizations.
Robb Rose, CPA, Partner, Plante Moran
Robb leads Plante Moran’s Ohio higher education practice and is a leader within the firm’s Northwest Ohio manufacturing and distribution practice. Robb has over 20 years of experience providing accounting, auditing, and tax services to colleges and universities and related entities, governmental and not-for-profit organizations, manufacturers and distribution entities. He has served higher education clients for 20 years. Robb currently is the audit partner on 10 higher education institutions (4-year, 2-year, and private) and is the colleague partner on 2 four-year institutions and one private institution. Annually, he participates in the NACUBO Higher Education Accounting Forum, as well as the annual meetings of CACUBO and OACUBO.
Katie Thornton, CPA, Technical Resource Leader for Higher Education and Not-for-Profit, Plante Moran
Katie has over 16 years of experience serving not-for-profit and higher education clients. She is a leader in Plante Moran’s professional standards department for the not-for-profit and higher education industry groups. Currently, Katie is working with other technical leaders to prepare a comment letter to FASB related to the draft standard on contributions, which will impact government grants as well as developing tools for GASB 75, the new OPEB standards. Katie currently serves several large private foundations, public universities and related foundations. She is a frequent presenter at OACUBO, CACUBO and Michigan Community College Business Officers Association (MCCBOA). Katie serves as our firm’s expert on FASB’s recently issued not-for-profit financial reporting standards. She provided a higher education perspective during our recent webinar on the topic, which is available on demand at plantemoran.com/perspectives/webinars.
Carol Lalonde, CPA, Senior Tax Manager, Plante Moran
Carol is a senior tax manager with over 17 years of experience specializing in the taxation of higher education institutions, tax exempt hospitals, and healthcare organizations. Carol has also worked with numerous religious organizations and has consulted on tax issues affecting religious organizations. She is experienced in representing clients under IRS examination and has also presented at numerous external training sessions on various tax issues including the final §501(r) regulations. Carol regularly participates in webinars and writes articles for both higher education and health care. She is a member of the firm’s state and local tax group. Carol’s specific experience includes serving over 35 higher education clients. She has provided tax advice on all areas of exempt organization taxation, including all aspects of Forms 990 and 990T, as well as international taxation and state and local tax issues.
